Productive articulation of the machinery and equipment sector withinthe productive structures of Mexico and China and theirrole as diffusers of technological advance

Various theoretical works that analyze economic development and convergence identify industrialization as one of the factors that drives structural change and innovation processes; Likewise, the production of machinery and equipment is seen as one of the most relevant sectors for the economic system. Despite its importance, there is currently no interest in studying the sector, specifically in the role it plays in countries that have converged with economies with a higher level of economic development. Based on the above, through the methodology of structural analysis, the productive chains and the level of articulation of the machinery and equipment sector in two late-industrializing economies – Mexico and China – are studied during the years 2005 and 2015, with the purpose to analyze the evolution and the role played by the sector in each of the two countries. It is found that the presence of this industry in China is an important factor for technological and productive revitalization, due to its capacity for articulation, which is observed in a relatively long sequence of industries in its productive chain, which allows it to generate and diffusion of technological change. On the other hand, its weak presence and loss of articulation in the Mexican economy translates into a deep process of deindustrialization of the country and, with it, a high level of dependence on purchases from abroad, thus limiting the possibility of achieving a process of catching up with the most advanced economies.
