Intra-industrial automotive trade between Mexico and China, period 2005–2024

The automotive sector has positioned itself as a key sector for economic growth and development, and its evolution has largely determined Mexico’s place in Global Value Chains (GVCs). In order to contribute to the understanding of the sector’s structure and as a basis for public policy design, this research document seeks to quantify intra-industry trade (IIT) between Mexico and China by estimating the Grubell-Lloyd Index (GLI) for goods that comprise Chapter 87 of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS), for the period 2005-2024. The results show that trade behavior in Chapter 87 goods is diverse. There are items with symmetrical trade, items with asymmetric trade to a degree that allows for the implementation of measures to balance the scales. However, items with a strong dependence of Mexico on China were also identified, which emanates from the divergences in the degree of technological development and investment levels of each nation.
